Hoorah for Boot Camp!
December 11, 2007
It all started because Mrs. Derry and Mrs. Hovey joined an exercise program called Boot Camp!
So did we! We put on our snow gear and head out to the field. Our class does relays in the snow. We do the boxer shuffle, crab walk, hover, clap pushups, the snake, snow bunny hops and the right and left plank. If someone stops shuffling, everybody has to sprint to the fence and back. So usually no one stops shuffling! When our team gets done with our relay, we have to yell"HOORAH"! That means "yeah, we did it"! Sometimes to finish our workout, we run/walk the perimeter of our school, which is 1000 meters!
Mrs. Derry's class boot camp has helped us reduce stress and get strong and healthy! HOORAH!

Showcase Our Caring Huge Success by Sarah G.
The "Showcase Our Caring" food drive was a HUGE success! We collected 472+ cans and 134 boxes of food, hundreds of pounds of food. Mr. Buchanan's and Mrs. Hoyles 6th graders collected the food and motivated kids to bring in cans. After the week long drive three girls along with Mr. G and Mr. B delivered the load of food to the Red Cross Food Bank on Broadway St. The girls that helped with the delivery were Caroline K., Emily M., and your author, Sarah G.. The Red Cross ladies were very happy about the donations! Good job Mary McGuire staff and students.

Meteorology in the Making
Mrs. Hovey’s class is making a weather station. We are practicing being meteorologist. We are working in groups. Each group has to teach the class about their weather term.
Each group has been collecting information about the weather term they were given for the past two weeks. Each group is making a poster, and a tool which will measure the different parts of weather. These tools will be put into the Weather Station. Once the Weather Station is set up we will be charting the weather every day. Once we get into a routine we will be broadcasting the weather to the rest of the school.
The terms we have been researching are Temperature, Clouds, Air Pressure, Humidity, Wind Direction, and Wind Speed. The tools we are making are a Thermometer, a Rain Gauge, an Anameter, a Hydrometer, a Barometer, a wind sock and a Weather Vain. We are using household items to make our tools and the weather station will sit out side of our classroom window. We hope you can stop by soon to see our progress in the making.

What Mrs. Ouellette Thinks About School
December.5, 2007
Mrs. Ouellette from room 108 answered some questions and here are her answers. Mrs. Ouellette’s favorite thing about teaching is that she enjoys seeing when her students learn something new and have an Ah-Ha moment. Her least favorite thing about teaching is when she can’t find a way to help a student who is struggling. I also asked Mrs. Ouellette what her #1 pet peeve is and she said that lately it’s when students ask a question before she has given directions for example: What are we doing in Science? Mrs. Ouellette’s favorite subject’s to teach are Science and Reading. Her hobbies are Reading, camping, movies, family time, and playing games. Mrs. Ouellette wanted us kids to know that she always wanted to work with kids as long as she could remember and she loves coming to school every day!!!!!! I love being in Mrs. Ouellette’s room and love the fun things she does with us.

Happenings in Ms. B's Room!
Just recently Ms. Burlington's class worked on a time line book report on a biography they have read. We had to have the date they were born, the day they died, and eight dates in between. We also had to have a picture and other information about the book. Some of the people in our class chose Meriwether Lewis, Ida B. Wells, Hellen Keller, Mario LemiEux, Princess Diana , and Daniel Boone. These projects are displayed in the sixth grade hallway.
In writing we started a new assignment, we are doing persuasive essays. We had to choose something that is or could happen in the society. In our writing it has to include an introduction, two reasons with supporting details, a rebuttal, and a conclusion.
In our P.E. class we have started volleyball. We started doing the basics such as hitting and serving. Then we have captains who have a draft. It is a lot of fun.

Maggie and her Family Teach about Native American Life
Dec. 6, 2007 In November Maggie’s mother, father, and sister came to Mrs. Nerbonne’s class. They taught us about native culture. They taught us about the Butterfly (Fancy Shawl) Dance and the Jingle Dress Dance, showed us the Regalia to wear for the dances, and told us how the dresses were made. Maggie wore the beautiful jingle dress she dances in. Her father wore his regalia and brought some eagle feathers he uses when he dances.
They also taught what goes into their medicine bags: sage, sweetgrass, and sema. They are used for healing.
Maggie told two legends about Nana Boozchoo: “How the Rainbow was made” and “Why the Owl Can’t Roll His Eyes.”
We learned the Ojibway word for colors (blue is miinaade), days (Friday is Jibaatgogiizhigad) and numbers (10 is mdaas) We had a lot of fun! We send a big thank you to Maggie's family for helping us celebrate Native American History Month. By Aaliyah and Maggie
The Three Little Pigs Get Remixed
December 12, 2007
As our winter break gets closer, we, the students in Mrs. Hoyle’s class, have been finishing several projects. In writing we have been creating new versions of the classic story “The Three Little Pigs.” We started this project when we had a mini-lesson on strong leads. We came up with exciting new introductions to replace the boring “Once upon a time…”, and this turned into a full-fledged project. We are extremely excited to finish these stories, because we have put a lot of effort into them, and they turned out great. Next week we will be sharing our stories. Some of the titles include: The Big Bad Wolf, The Wolf, The Big Bad Wolf Gang, and The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Alien Wolf. And this has been a Junior Oilers Newsflash. Stay tuned for further updates…

Safety Patrol at Mary Mcguire
The sixth graders who are on Safty Patrol at Mary McGuire School have an important job. We make sure that the hallways are clear, and that the students are where they are supposed to be in the mornings. We must wear our belts while on duty , and report to the captain if anything goes wrong. If someone is not doing a good job, Mrs.Derry, who is our superviser, can decide whether they should stay on the force.
Being on the Safety Patrol is a big responsibility. We have to follow the rules, and not let our friends talk us into letting them break them. If you have questions or you have a problem, we try to help.
The kids at Mcguire are doing a great job with Safety Patrol and take the job seriously. I will miss being a part of it during the second semester. Don't forget to volunteer to be on the Safety Patrol because it's fun and it helps our school be even better.

A Day in the Life of Ms. B's Students
January 16, 2008 Ms. Burlington's Class
I'll be dipped in applesauce class has started. (Sighs from the crowd). The first thing we usually start with... math. We are learning about fractions and how get them to the smallest form. (It is harder than it looks.)
Our seating arrangement is like a maze. It is a "U" shape, with 2 rows inside of it. Our seating arrangement is "A-MAZING!!!! Get it? Maze? A-mazing? o.k, that is a bad joke.
In social studies,we have our representitive for the geography bee, which is Mark. Good luck, Mark!
We have been reading the book MRS. FRISBY AND THE RATS OF NIMH. It is about a mother mouse with a sick son named Timothy and her wild adventure to save his life.
Not to long ago we finished our book reports. They're really cool, some are posters, some are plates with food the main character would be likely to eat, plus other amazing projects.
Whoever thought studying could be a total paradise? We didn't until we tried study island. It has great online games about subjects in school! So take a break and try out study island.

What's New in Ms. Mako's Class?
We are reading biographies in our class. When we finish our biographies we are going to create timelines of important events in the life of our famous person. These timelines are due on January 24th and will be shared the next week. Of interesting note, our class won a pizza party for our fundraising sales. This event will happen on January 15, 2008.
